It was a hilly ride right from the morning – and by the end of the day I had climbed 1460 vertical meters which is the same as a hard day down in the Andes Mountains. The mountains of Maine are not that tall, but when you continuously climb from 0 to 200 m and down again throughout the day, it all adds up.
Rolling hills and what seemed like a thousand lakes was on the menu today.
Things continue to get more isolated up here in Northern Maine – but in a good way. There is still a supermarket here and there in the small villages I pass through, but the traffic is getting light. The best of both worlds.
Maine is a lot loss commercialized compared to the States further south, but you still pass a McDonald’s once in a while – and with a local twist; McLobstah!
I thought I would end up wild camping tonight, but by the end of the day I got in contact with Rick WW1ME. “Once you get to Hancock, make a left turn down the small dirt road towards the grey house, and we will find a place for you”. Not only was it great to catch up with Rick who I met first time in Massachusetts. The neighbors were also invited over for dinner, and they happened to be from Richmond where I had cycled through a month ago. It turned out that we had a mutual friend down there, even though I had only spent a few days in Virginia. And so even the US can seem like a small village from time to time.
Tomorrow is a special day as it will be the last cycling day in the States!
McLobster! That’s something I’ve never seen before! As for the small hills, they soon add up!
