It was my plan to do a little tour by bicycle around the beautiful Ometepe Island. It was also supposed to be a rest day, so I setled for a slow 40 km ride as a compromise.
I left Moyogalpa which is the main city on the island – and by main city I mean just a single road with a few shops, restaurants, and small supermarkets on each side. Soon I was among fields on which everything seemed to grow super fast in the volcanic soil.
Sabrina had told me a few good places to stop on the way. Always good with a local guide for such tips. At the Jesus Maria beach I ran into Joel from Argentina making his own way up towards Alaska in his VW van. He plans to arrive there in about 1½ years, making plenty of stops on the way. Another nomad of the road 🙂
I loved the small villages hidden between the green fields and forests. World class cycling!
There is just the right amount of tourists on Ometepe. Enough that you will be able to find a nice cafe where you can enjoy a cappuccino, but not so many that the place doesn’t still have a very local feeling to it.
Tomorrow it is back to the mainland.
What a place! I’m definitely going to have to pay a visit there. I only hope it’s just as laid back in 10-15 years time as it is now.
Btw, is the number plate a souvenir or a legal requirement?
Yes Stephen, Ometepe is a must when you make it to Nicaragua! And the number plate is a sourvenir I got in Panama. I like it 🙂
Lovely!
