Mark was up early, cooking a big breakfast. I have been eating a lot of bacon and eggs lately – but then again, doing all this cycling some calories in the morning is a good thing 🙂
Not long after saying goodbye and thanks to Mark I was passing through the charming town of Exeter. This is as New Englandish as it gets.
No, not that Greenland, the New Hampshire Greenland…
In Portsmouth I was cycling across a bridge over the Piscataqua River, and suddenly I was in the State of Maine. The very last US state on this trip. I almost can’t believe it. It feels like I left from Key West, Florida only last week.
I had been looking forward to visit Maine. Compared to the rest of the East Coast, I had imagined that things would get a little more adventurous and a little less commercial up here in the extreme north east part of the US. I was looking forward to see if my expectations were right.
I noticed immediately that Maine is a popular tourist destination; hotels, restaurants, and other tourist shops were scattered along the US 1 highway. The ride along the coast was beautiful – no wonder people like to be here for the holidays.
In Portland I was heading straight for the ferry docks. Doug K1DG had generously invited me out to his summer house on Long Island for a break. Coming from an island nation myself, I love islands. There is something about leaving and arriving to a place by sea.
The 45 minute ferry ride to Long Island was spectacular.
As the ferry arrived, Doug was there welcoming me to his island. Doug is a genuinely good guy, and a rest day out here on a quiet island is just what I need. Thanks for the great welcome!
Beautiful country, the East Coast!! My husband and I always wanted to go there but never did. Thanks for sharing, maybe one day we’ll get there. I’m glad your getting ready for another adventure, I’m getting excited!!! Plus, it keeps my math skills up!!!!
What a beautiful part of the country! I’ve never been to Maine, and have always imagined it to be quite scenic!
True Stephen… Maine is well worth a visit. And a bicycle is the perfect way to do it – in summer! 🙂
Thanks Suzanne… The US ride was such a great experience with all the nice people there. And yes, now I’m also getting excited for Africa!
