Day 1749: St. Augustine – Kingsland, Georgia!

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Aug - 04 - 2015

Distance: 111.7 km
Ride time: 4:57:01
Average: 22.6 km/h
Max speed: 32.8 km/h
Total: 38805 km

Another great wild camping night at the beaches of Florida with full view of the stars and the sound of waves from my tent. I was up early, ready to hit the road by 7.

I was passing Jacksonville before my East Coast Greenway, the bike route I’m following, took me to a small ferry to cross the St. Johns river. By this time the thunderstorms were already building up and I was expecting a wet afternoon on the bike.

I had to make a couple of short stops before the weather cleared up again. Typical Florida weather.

The goal today was to cross the state border into Georgia – something I have been excited about for a couple of days. Florida has been a great ride with plenty of amazing hospitality. At more than 900 km of cycling since Key West it will also be the biggest state I will cross! Florida is very commercial with hotels everywhere, and where very few of the the people you meet are actually from Florida.

I think Georgia will be more like the real South 🙂 I did indeed have the Ray Charles song on my mind as I crossed the state line…

Things certainly got more rural on the other side. The bike path also disappeared – something I will probably have to get used to. I was aiming for the Walkabout Camp site which lets cyclists stay for 10$ – pretty cheap for the US where camping sometimes costs as much as 35$. I cheap motel room will cost about the same.

Looking forward to more deep South cycling tomorrow.
