I’m now cycling the rugged West Coast, one of the more remote areas of New Zealand. There is certainly a long way between the townships here, and the road seems to be going either up or down all the time. It’s great cycling!
In the afternoon I arrived at Fox Glacier. The glacier itself is located 6 km from the township, and I went to have a look first. The most fascinating thing for me about Fox Glacier was the fact that I was cycling in dense rain forest right up to the beginning of the glacier; one moment you might think you are in the Amazonas, the next you are looking at ice.
When I reached Fox Glacier village I decided to pay for a hostel bed. The West Coast (also called the wet coast) receives 5000 mm of rain annually, and I had seen in the forecast that it would be raining during the night and morning.
In my hostel room I met Lloyd, Tom and Molly from Perth in Australia. A coincidence as Perth is the place I plan to go after New Zealand to look for more work.
