Day 1701, San Lorenzo – San Miguel, El Salvador!

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Jun - 17 - 2015

Distance: 111.1 km
Ride time: 6:16:30
Average: 17.7 km/h
Max speed: 46.8 km/h
Total: 36144 km

I had read in another cycling blog about Honduras that you could hear machine gun fire all night from your hotel room. I had a quick listen before going to bed, but all was quiet in San Lorenzo. In fact I think some of these cycling blogs will sometimes add a bit of spice to their stories…

The next morning I had a chat with some of the locals at the central square before heading towards the border.

If there is one bad thing to be said about Honduras it’s the roads. You never really know what to expect around the next corner.

Only a single night and just over 24 hours in Honduras this time. I hope to be back to get a better idea of this country with the bad reputation and friendly people.

Crossing the border was nice and easy, and I was now in country number 33 in Cycling The Globe history. I only had to wait for a rain shower to pass before I could continue towards San Miguel.

Just like Nicaragua and Honduras, you are always surrounded by volcanoes in El Salvador.

My first meal in a country is always interesting. El Salvador did not disappoint. Good stuff for a hungry cyclist. Furthermore they use the dollar here, so it is easy to understand the prices, although I wont get another bill and coin for my collection.

In San Miguel I found a basic room for 14$ and settled in for the night. Although El Salvador is slightly safer than Honduras, you probably shouldn’t be walking around the streets after dark here.

  2. I wonder how many motorists and cyclists that road has claimed!

  3. Hi Brian! Wow, amazing to do it on a penny-farthing. I would prefer my Bianchi though 🙂

  4. Luis Delgadillo says:

Hey Thomas, are you going to travel through México?

  5. Hi Luis! Yes, but I will only be cycling through a small corner of Mexico, from Belize up to Cancun. From there taking a flight to Florida. In fact I’m in Tulum right now! 73 de OZ1AA
