It seems like most long distance cyclists who start in Ushuaia and want to cycle the length of the Americas end up in Alaska. Not a bad place for sure, but since I plan to return to Europe I thought it would make more sense to aim for the North American East Coast.
The good thing about being in this cycling business is that you make your own rules. That was when I came across a place called L’Anse aux Meadow, a archaeological site of a Viking settlement on Newfoundland in Canada. As soon as I read about the place I knew that I had found my destination.
Not that the destination is very important to me – the road is the goal and the goal is the road. But, one day (in a year and a couple of months from now) I hope to be standing on that windswept spot on Newfoundland, thinking back on many amazing experiences in the Americas.

Looks like a nice destination! Funny thing: when you look at the map it seems pretty up north, but considering the latitude it’s even a bit more south than Dordrecht, the place where I live.

Not a bad decision, Thomas. Culturally, the route up through the USA via Texas , the deep south, the Carolinas, into the more densely populated NE USA is very interesting and varied. Can’t go wrong. The Americans are a VERY hospitable lot. You’ll love them, and vice versa.

Most multi-continent riders ride up the US West coast into Vancouver and then across Canada as far as Montreal or Halifax. Newfoundland is a bit out of the way. It would be a shame to miss the Canadian Rockies. Alaska to Tierra del Fuega is a common, but quite different ride.

Hi Berry! I’m sure there is a lot of great cycling in Canada. Still not very sure about my route up there, but I might miss the Rockies… Oh well, you can’t have it all.
