As I woke up to another beautiful morning with full sunshine over Mount Cook I knew it was going to be a special day.
The goal was to reach the summit of Mount Ollivier at 1933 m. A peak that was apparently Sir Edmund Hillary’s first major climb in 1939.
The first part of the hike was on steps. Plenty of people were on the way to the Mueller Hut where it was possible to spend the night. My plan was to make it down the same day.
Later the climb would be steeper as we reached some gletcher crossings. It must still have been around 25 degrees up there as I was not feeling cold at all in my shorts and T-shirt. The views where absolutely stunning near the Mueller Hut and at the top of Mount Ollivier.
After coming down from the mountain I met Michelle, a Canadian cyclist, who had just arrived at the camp site. We spent a nice evening sharing stories from on and off the road. Michelle is a vegetarian and didn’t really approve my dinner consisting of two slices of bread and baked beans. I promised that I would buy some fresh fruit and vegetables in the next super market I meet
I was falling asleep with the full moon lightning up the snow capped mountains above. What a day!
Oh, wow. Absolutely stunning photos!
