Day 230: Prabumulih – Baturaja

Another great cycling day on Sumatra. It felt great to pass the 11000 km mark. Even though I’m certainly getting closer to Australia, there is still a long way to go. Australia itself is huge! I expect to pass 16000 km before reaching Sydney.

Today the daily downpour occurred in the middle of the day. It rains like crazy for half an hour, then the sun appears again. I found a small hut to seek cover and had a nice chat with the locals. I’m trying to learn some Indonesian sentences. They say the language is easy to learn. Simple grammar using the Latin alphabet and easy pronunciation. Furthermore the few words I learned in Malaysia are also usable here.

Today was the last day of cycling through the flat jungle of Sumatra. The mountains are next.

Notice the satellite antenna is pointing almost straight up! An unexpected thing for those of us who live far from the equator.

  2. Very true Randy. I also find it interesting how some very simple houses in small villages often have a huge satellite antenna in the front garden.
