After a big breakfast with Carsten, Tom, Louis, and the rest of the people at Hotel Hellers Krug it was time for the inevitable goodbye and Auf Wiedersehen. Thanks again, Carsten, for making the German chapter of the ride a special one.
After hotel dinners and king size beds it was back to business at Cycling The Globe. Ever since leaving the Mediterranean Sea at Montpellier I have been doing a lot of cycling with only a very few rest days. It is as if a very strong inner desire is pulling me back towards Denmark. Looking at the map I’m indeed getting close even though it feels like I entered Germany only yesterday. In fact I might cross the border in only two days.
The long hours in the saddle is taking it’s toll – or well, at least Manon told me I was quite a bit skinnier when we met in The Netherlands compared to when we cycled through Spain and France together. It seems like I will spend the first weeks of my time back home trying to gain a few kilos of weight.
I was cycling through a flat and rural part of Germany towards Hamburg, mostly following the cycling routes suggest by Google Maps. Today it worked out rather well. With a bit of zig-zagging through tiny villages I managed to stay on a bike path almost all day.
Yesterday as we had dinner at the DX Hotel we were joined by a journalist from the local Täglicher Anzeiger Holzminden. Today I got a message from Carsten saying “Look, you made it to the front page” 🙂
And Carsten had even more surprises up the sleeve: “I have talked to one of my hotel colleagues. When you get to Stemmen go to the Landgut Hotel and ask for Alexander. There is a room ready for you”.
And I who thought I would be spending another night in my tent…
Guess I’d better learn to read German. 🙂
