When I was first planning the trip I was reluctant to choose any destination at all. My philosophy was, and still is, that the road is the goal and the goal is the road. I did however soon find it handy to have a more down-to-earth answer ready when people asked “where are you going?”. I decided on Sydney – pretty much as far away from Denmark as you can get.
Now that I have come to Australia I don’t feel that the trip is over just yet. The next continent waiting somewhere over there on the other side of the Pacific Ocean would be South America.
A plan has now evolved to fly to Argentina and start cycling north through Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and onwards through Central America, Mexico and the US before taking another flight to Europe and cycle back home to Denmark. That would make the circle complete.

I will stay in Australia until my visa runs out in June 2012 for some more work and a bit of sight seeing on this fascinating place. After that, bring on stage 2!
Interesting plan Thomas 🙂
-Probably a good idea though to spend a while nursing yourself, the bike and your bank account before starting part two 🙂
I love it when Stage 2 is longer than Stage 1.
Great choice, it looks fascinating.
Thanks Bo. Yes, I’m looking forward to new cycle adventures as well, but for now a break is actually OK.
Hey Fred – South America it is. Would be cool to see you on the roads there for meeting number 4 🙂
Great plans, Thomas! I am very jealous…enjoy your trip! I hope your future experiences will be as nice as your previous ones. I wonder when home sickness will hit you, if ever… 🙂
Hail to the cyclist!
Thanks Stefan. I’m pretty sure there are many new great experiences waiting along the roads. We will see 🙂 73
Haha Kristian, foredraget maa nok blive udskudt lidt (mere).
Love the title of this post! Merry christmas, all the best for 2012 and part #2, Thomas.
hi,
good luck with your 2nd half of your cycling tour. Have a merry Christmas and safe and healthy 2012. Don’t forget to post some postcards from Latin american countries.
regards
nagi
Hi Nagi,
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours as well. And oh yes, I will certainly send you some cards from Latin America and perhaps from some nice Pacific islands as well 🙂
Thomas
Wow awesome decision. I finished up at around 10,000km. Am in Perth now, Sydney on the 30th January just to visit a friend, then back to Perth. I had to leave out India in the end due to lack of funds so fell short of my 13,000km target. I go back in a month to replenish my bank account and rebuild parts of the bike. Very jealous of you stage 2, a full round the world trip. The Mexico stages should make awesome reading. Stay safe.
Fortsat god tur hilsen Bjarne OZ2UV.
Thanks a lot Rob. And well done on your trip as well! Perth sounds nice. That is one of the places where I’m thinking to look for (more) work in Australia. Maybe we will get a chance to meet then.
Hej Bjarne!
