I had been in contact with Glen and his wife Ruth who are known in the bicycle community for hosting cyclists passing through Darwin. Even though I had declined the offer, Glen had told me he would be waiting in the airport when my flight arrived at 5 in the morning. A statement of Australian hospitality.
Before meeting Glen I had to clear Australian immigration. They are known to be tough. Before the flight I had cleaned the bike and the tent as you are not allowed to bring soil into the country. The friendly guy at immigration was luckily happy with what he saw.
When we arrived at Ruth and Glens beautiful house in the Palmerston suburb I was given my own room, completely with bathroom and outdoor kitchen. A hot shower and a toilet with toilet paper is something I’m certainly not used to. After breakfast Ruth and Glen went to work and I tried to sleep. After a few hours I woke up. Being in a new country was simply too exciting to be sleeping the day away.
When I left the house and went for a short walk in the neighborhood I was constantly bombarded with new impressions. After 8 months in Asia it felt utterly strange to be in a western country again.
