My hotel in Cairo is located between a Christian church and a bank. This means a crazy amount of security just outside the door: two vehicles (almost like tanks) and around 10 armed soldiers on guard 24/7, huge blocks of concrete and spikes that can be used as road blocks, and a crane on standby to move cars away quickly. It looks like a war zone but unfortunately the sad events in Alexandria shows that all this is probably needed.
I wouldn’t say that I feel uncomfortable though. The atmosphere in the streets is friendly and life goes on as usual.
I spent most of my day at the hotel enjoying a rare high speed WiFi connection uploading some photos and videos to the website. I almost felt guilty for not going out and explore more of Cairo, but even being in a new and exiting city, January 1st is a day to do nothing.
